Could a behavioural change campaign save energy and cut Russian gas imports?
A call for collective action could help UK pivot away from dependence on Russian fossil fuels
There is a second world war poster showing a red-faced couple looking angrily at their daughter as she adds more fuel to their fire. The caption reads: “Save fuel to make munitions for battle.”
It was one of a series of public campaigning posters aimed at driving a collective response to the need to save energy for the war effort. The message was clear: stop using so much fuel, because it is needed for the fighting troops.

Many countries have been forced to reduce their reliance on Russia's oil and gas in the wake of its invasion of Ukraine. Today, as Europe and the UK try to pivot away from their dependence on Russian fossil fuels, there is so far no similar call for collective action from the public. Considering the current situation, this is a reasonable measure to break away from our dependence on hostile nations.
But even before this we needed fast action due to recent climate events and the world health concerns (due to the build-up of toxic and greenhouse gases). The EU and UK being so dependent on hostile countries for a fuel we should not even be using is just another reason to take advantage of endless sources of energy such as solar, wind and geothermal, that is abundant across EU countries. A strategy that could make the EU self-sufficient, and even a big exporter of energy from #TrueCleanEnergy.
