Britain's electricity system 'greenest ever' over Easter
Great Britain's electricity system was the greenest it had ever been at lunchtime on Easter Bank Holiday Monday, its operator has said.
Sunny and windy weather, coupled with low demand for power, led to a surge in renewable sources of energy, National Grid Electricity System Operator said.
It meant low-carbon energy sources made up almost 80% of Britain's power.

Fortunately, most nations are transitioning from a fossil fuel based electricity generation to cleaner sources dues to their commitments under the Paris Agreement. The UK showed this Easter the great results in electric production, generating almost 80% of the country power from low-carbon sources. Although it's a brilliant start, we still need to make sure these low carbon sources are genuine true clean energy sources, not just ‘not so bad’ options like biomass and wood pellets (encompassed within the renewables title).
A lot of news articles switch between the words ‘electricity’ and ‘energy’ quite freely but this will often give a very wrong impression of how we’re doing, as electricity represents on average around 21% of total energy use. There is still a huge 79% used for transport, industrial use, farming and other requirements, which is mainly all still powered by dirty fossil fuels. We still need a solution to cut these huge sources of emissions.
We know transport, infrastructure, and large-scale industrial processes could be powered by green hydrogen, which has the potential to provide endless clean power. But firstly, we need to see a solid production and implementation of this source of energy. True clean energy sources, such as solar or wind can solve both problems, by generating clean electricity, green hydrogen and even fresh water all combined in the one process. We have to start working towards all of our energy needs being powered by True Clean Energy!
