So, Grant Shapps, the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero for the United Kingdom is saying “Unless you can explain how we can transition [to net zero] without oil and gas, we need oil and gas,” Well Mr Shapps, it's a worry that you think that way but I’m glad you asked us to help you with how to transition cleanly. Very simply we can create a huge amount of tidal, wind and solar electricity plants in and around the UK. Taking advantage of the colossal amount of natural energy around the British Isles, with our endless coastlines and high mountainous areas, this energy will be abundant and can be used across the UK. Then, the government can support UK companies to develop energy plants in hotter, sunnier regions of Europe and even North Africa to produce Green Hydrogen from Solar CSP/CST (Concentrated Solar Power/Concentrated Solar Thermal) plants. This Green Hydrogen can be sold worldwide and also provide a clean gas energy supply for the UK. If you have any other questions on energy transition and energy supply Mr Shapps please feel free to ask us. However, extracting and burning gas and oil is most definitely not the solution, no matter how hard you try to clean up the mess afterwards.

If ever you could understand the frustration of climate activists and why some are going to such extremes lengths, it is events like this that make it quite obvious. Politicians stand up saying one thing, to get support and votes, then the next day they are expanding not only the use of fossil fuels but new discovery and extraction licenses! And we are not talking about a small amount or a short-term requirement for our current energy needs. This extraction will be spread out over the next 50 years, with the use of these dirty fuels lasting even longer! It would take approximately 440 million US households over 50 years to burn through the 4.4tn cubic feet of gas that is estimated to be extracted from this new Gulf of Mexico area. This will generated an unbelievable amount of Greenhouse gas emission and air pollutants, that our planet and our health does not need. Then, in addition, the 1bn barrels of oil that are extracted, will be spewed out of over 1.65 million cars every year over the next 50 years! So many countries around the world seem to be saying one thing in their supposed environmental commitments and their clean projections for the future, while continuing to propagate more and more dirty fossil fuel projects. We need to provide proven, reliable clean energy sources that can compete and easily replace these old power systems. Once a huge supply of green hydrogen and clean electricity is readily available then governments and energy companies will have no excuse to be throwing billions in to fossil fuel extraction. This sounds like good news to begin with, however when you read the details it is not quite as much of a deadline as it seems. To begin with this is 12 years away and only regarding new cars sold in the EU, there is no rule on the current 292 million cars on the road in the EU or the estimated 1.4 billion in the world (as of 2021). We can only hope that over the next 14 years the number of petrol and diesel cars does not go up too much! However according to a report by the International Energy Agency (IEA) the number of passenger cars (this does not include commercial vans or trucks) will increase to an estimated 1.8 billion. What percentage of these vehicles will be electric or hydrogen powered will depend on a lot of factors. The same report by the IEA also notes that the number of electric vehicles on the road is projected to reach 145 million by 2030, up from around 11 million in 2020. To achieve this there will have to be a massive jump in electric car sales in the next 7 years, then even still this will be a very small percentage of the petrol and diesel vehicles on the road in 2030, fossil fuel powered vehicles that will be emitting massive amounts of Greenhouse Gases (GHGs) and harmful PM2.5 particulate matter air pollution. Going back to the EU law, set for the far away date of 2035, Germany also pushed for so called e-fuel cars to be included in these 'zero-emission' cars. E-fuels are petrol powered cars but the petrol used has had the C02 captured in advance, this however does not stop emissions from the car exhaust including nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, benzene, and formaldehyde and PM2.5 particulate matter. So phasing out petrol fumes from cars is not just about CO2, the health benefits for everyone go a lot further. However this new law still allows for petrol power cars to be sold. Poland, Italy, Bulgaria and Romania also did not back the law and of course we were only talking about EU countries in this new law, a great many countries around the world do not have any plans in place to cease the sale of petrol and diesel vehicles. So we will find out in the next decade exactly how fixed this deadline is and exactly what percentage of car sales around the world it affects. We ask for action now and we keep getting half-hearted deadlines, pushed decades in to the future to be another governments problem. The few facts we can be certain about is that if we want to get anywhere near any of these targets; Reducing air pollution and averting climate disasters. We need to start producing a huge amount of electric and hydrogen powered vehicles, increase our true clean electricity and hydrogen production to power all of these vehicles and provide the required power grid distribution infrastructure so clean vehicles are an option to everyone, everywhere. It is astounding to read these reports, while politicians stand up and claim to be supporting a fast transition to clean energy for their country and the world, we see the real background story is that they are still supporting fossil fuel use, in the scale of billions more than clean or renewable energy. With background agreements like these kept out of the public eye, politicians, as always, can say one thing that they know the public wants to hear while doing the complete opposite. There needs to be far more and constant transparency with exactly what tax payers are paying for and where our energy is really coming from. Misleading comments from governments and politicians need to carry a serious punishment, otherwise they will never change and the public will believe things are being fixed when really it is just business as usual.

Soaring energy prices and soaring profits for all of the big oil companies. We don't judge companies for making a profit, businesses need to keep investors happy and generate profits to keep the business moving forward. Usually the companies in this industry do invest back in to the company creating more fuel sources and expanding energy supply, for our ever increasing demand. However, seeing how expensive old fossil fuels are becoming and how much increased profit these companies are making, we do not want to hear any excuses about not having the money or clean energy production, or new clean plants being costly. There are so many examples around the world of huge clean energy plants that generate a limitless supply of energy, without polluting our air or harming our planet. These plants have a cost, but just like any new oil field discovery, drilling rigs, pipelines or new electricity generation plant. Millions need to be invested somewhere and with every increasing cost for fossil fuels, it is obvious that clean energy will supply the most stable, cost effective and non-damaging energy for the planet. Let's hope we see Aramco, ExxonMobil and Shell channeling these huge profits into the energy sources of the future. Once the clean energy plants, distribution networks and end user systems are correctly in place, these companies can happily make their big yearly profits while providing the worlds energy needs and ensuring a clean and healthy planet for the foreseeable future.

This is something that has seemed obvious to us at Atlantis for many years but we do realise a lot of people seem to miss the complete finances as work with a lot of large scale industrial and political changes. Politicians and companies often like to focus on one number and one event. For example, closing down a coal powered energy plant will losing x number of jobs, yes in that specific company and for that specific energy source. However, the demand for that energy does not go away, the need will have to be filled from somewhere else. Be it wind farms, solar energy, geothermal plants, or as we see at present some not so good but less polluting energy sources. These other sources of energy also require staff, manufacturers for component, partner companies for shipments and energy transmission. These create new jobs and money into other companies. So, we should not see the closing down of old fossil fuel plants, mines and drilling platforms as losing jobs, it is simply moving jobs into a different energy sector. In addition, if we are to believe the big price tags that energy companies and governments are putting on this energy transition, then it seems like it will be creating a lot more jobs than were in the previous fossil fuel energy industry. It's a win win, cleaner air, more jobs and less damage to our planet. Hopefully we will be seeing more positive data like this on how making our energy systems more environmentally friendly is also beneficial for national economies and the world economy.

For decades we've had politicians talking about new targets to reduce fossil fuels use or reduce air pollution but again and again these targets are cut back or extended. We cannot keep letting these problems drag on for decades. Then, as we keep seeing, we are sure in a decade from now there will be another slow down on rules and restrictions. Air pollution caused tens of thousands of premature deaths every year in the UK and millions of premature deaths around the world. Add to that the millions that suffer from lung cancer, asthma and other respiratory issues, it is shocking that non-essential wood burning in urban areas, for just aesthetic reasons, has not been banned years ago. With the pollution generated from all of the diesel vehicles and other petrol vehicles in cities we should not be adding more pollution sources into the mix. Imagine how clean and fresh our city air could be with electric and hydrogen cars and no wood burning. You wouldn't need to escape to the countryside for some fresh air as it would already be right where you live, you could sit at a roadside café or bar drinking and enjoying the day, without breathing in endless car and truck loads of polluted air. This is what we should be aiming to have in the next few years not talking about 2040 or 2050. Help us make this change now!

It is ridiculous to still see these stalling tactics. While on one side energy prices are increasing and profits are actually rising for energy companies they are still finding excuses not to provide true clean energy, which would reduce air pollution and stop our slide in to more devastating climate change. The BP boss says they are "helping provide the energy the world needs" and yes the world needs energy to power all of our essential work, health and personal needs. However, there is already a huge amount of this that can be provided right now by clean electricity generating plants and green hydrogen fuel. Unfortunately, it seems obvious that these companies first want their returns on their dirt fuels, that they have already investing billions in, before they start cleaning up their act. There is estimated to be just over 50 years of oil and natural gas supplies available, these companies are obviously not making an effort to replace these fuels until their supplies run out. If we want clean energy sources for our electricity supplies, factory production process, transport and household needs we need to do this ourselves. Waiting on these companies to completely change their business model is not going to happen fast enough. Join Atlantis is helping to make this change happen now!

This is a wonderful science breakthrough for fusion technology. As we learn more, the more we advance and one day hopefully we will be able to make everyone's lives around the world a lot easier and a lot better. We do have to realise though, that there are very few quick fixes that will solve big problems in an instant. As the experts are telling us, fusion energy is a step forward but realistically large scale fusion power generation will not be achieved until at least the second half of this century. In addition to that, energy production, distribution and storage have always been hugely expensive systems to put in place which fusion technology does not remove. So even though one day this could be a great source of unlimited energy for our planet, this will not be realised in the coming decades and is certainly not a solution for the current climate crisis and solving air pollution. We do not want to knock new advances in technology but we also do not want politicians, companies and the public getting distracted from our current task at hand and the essential things we need to get change in the next 5-10 years

The more research that is carried out the more we see the devastating impacts global warming is having. Most of us would assume that glaciers melting will only push up sea levels, which will be catastrophic enough by itself. But now we are understanding that bacteria living inside the icy glacier ecosystems, that gradually contributes to our seas and waterways, will now be dumped in huge amounts into these areas in one go, due to our glaciers rapidly melting. This could damage and overwhelm delicate ecosystems and create some very nasty water borne diseases that affect wildlife and even transfer to humans. It is still shocking that any company, any country, or any individual does not want to stop this giant cascade that using fossil fuels is causing. We are playing a very dangerous science experiment with the food chain, weather systems and our entire planet, which will almost certainly have a disastrous affect on humans and all creatures on our planet.
